Stories about mermaids existed for centuries and forms a
large part of the folklore about supernatural beings water, especially around
coastal regions such as Cornwall England or northern islands of Scotland . Seeing
sirens was considered bad sign, presaging storms and stormy sea. There are many
stories describing their interaction with people.
Sirens description is very similar to the Outer Hebrides in Cornwall . Usually upper
body was a beautiful woman with long hair and the waist down was that over. In
many of the classic descriptions mermaids sitting on a rock near the shore, combing
their hair, singing sweetly and admiring their beauty in a mirror that clasp. Their
beautiful song lures men much like the sirens, and the unfortunate victims were
either drowned, their world and eaten in the depths of the sea. Mermaids Rock
near Lamorna such a place, at the eastern end of Cornwall . It was a place haunted by sirens
sing their fishermen, luring them to death. Sometimes mermaids are drawn out of
the water for any particular song. Mermaid of Zennor in Cornwall claimed Mathew Trewella due to his
beautiful voice.
In some tales mermaids are more willing and have the ability
to grant magical powers, but usually it is a high price to pay for that. In ,, STORY
LOTEY and the Mermaid Bothrell, traditional tales of West Cornwall
SITE Lotey, a fisherman finds a mermaid stranded on shore while he was
walking on the beach. He helps her back to the sea and she offers him three
wishes. He chooses to break spells power, the power to compel spirits for the
collective good and these powers to pass from him to his followers. It grants
the wishes but almost pulls in water just waving a penknife before her she release her hold. After nine years in
which he used his powers of siren turn around after him and take him into the
depths. Since then every nine years one of his descendants said he perished at
sea.
Although most stories describe sirens to be dependent on the
sea, they are not only in marine waters and there are several stories about
mermaids who haunt the rivers and deep lakes. Pond-sirens, below Kinder
Downfall in Derbyshire is one such location. Mermaid appears on a certain date
and usually has a deceptive nature. Black Mere, near Leek in Staffordshire was
also thought to be haunted by a mermaid. It is probable that the term siren to
describe a wider range of supernatural water creatures.
There is belief in creatures half fish, half man for
thousands of years. The first references to these beings is found in the form
of the god Oannes, who was lord of the waters worshiped at the beginning of
civilization in ancient Babylon .
There are several other gods with fish tail, but the classic mermaid known in England is
probably derived from Celtic folklore, folklore and stories of local sea, in
places where people were in contact with the sea as part of everyday life .
There have been several sightings of mermaids present in the
last hundred years, even in the 20th century, especially in places where old
traditions die hard. In northern Sandwood Bay in northern Scotland was long
believed that mermaids are being reported as recently as the 19th century, today
the area is reputed to be by other phenomena, perhaps related in some way with
the older sightings. Although these appearances have little credibility can be
related to the same mechanism that makes people see ghosts, black dogs, etc.
